TV Show Review: "Russian Doll"

Russian Doll is a Netflix original created by the star of the show Natasha Lyonne. In the show Natasha Lyonne plays Nadia Vulvokov, a young women who finds herself reliving her 36th birthday over and over again. The concept of Russian Doll is similar to Groundhog day in the sense of the main character is reliving a singular set of days over and over until the resolve.

Within the first few episodes we follow Nadia through her several attempts to leave and survive the night. The series is marketed as a comedic drama, which is very true. There are many moments within the show that are both heartfelt and brilliantly hilarious. One moment that stands out in the show and that was shown within the trailer which is a sequence of Nadia repeatedly falling down the stairs trying to escape the party. It is briefly interrupted by comedic moments of Nadia trying different ways to get down the stairs.
Stair fall:

Even though Russian doll is very comedic is does not drop the drama. When we encounter the second character Alan Zaveri, who is also stuck in the loop, we see his story and how his life plays out, which is were a majority of drama comes from. We learn later in the show when Nadia and Alan are seeing how they are connected, that Alans first death was suicide. This moment was a true tear jerker. The show is a good watch which has a semi complex narrative, because of the multiple deaths and repeating. It is very accurate with some of the details of the city and the show seems to have a deep understanding of litiriture and art. The running soundtrack is well made and was clearlt thought out for the scenes it is used in.
