The haunting of hill house is a new netflix show, that came out in Octoer of 2018. The show takes place in the summer of 1992, Hugh and Olivia Crain and their children – Steven, Shirley, Theodora, Luke, and Nell - as they move into Hill house. The house is haunted and because of this the mother - olivia crain - kills herself. 26 years later the family reunite after the death of young Nell, another victem of the house. The show contsantly switches between the two time periods, and the most significant episode that shows this is Episode 6 titled "Two Storms" - as a reference too the storms taking place in both time periods. During episode 6 there is a 17 minute long sequence which was filmed in one take. The episode is full of ghosts and you often see "the bent neck lady" hiding in shots.

A chase sequence

Image
The brief for the chase sequence was that it had to be three minutes long, involve conflict and have good pacing. I knew that I wanted to create a chase sequence that would be relateable to students and comedic. My idea started with someone stealing another persons laudry. The laundrett was a perfect place to start the filming because it is alway quiet and if we filmed on a weekend we wouldnt be disrupted by any societies or classes. The route is as follows: Laundrett, Ashley carpark, crossing by the terrace, alley way behing Sweet and Spice to Ember.

Conventions of a chase sequence

Image
Chase sequences are commonly found in, action films, horror films and cartoons. They are also occassionalyfound in farsical comedies. Because of this chase sequences dont always have to be serious unless in horror or action films, in which they are. The music for chase scenes is usually intense and set the tone for the movie. One of the biggest sound effects used in chase scenes is hearbeats and heavy breathing, to keep the pace up and the tension high. With the different shot types the music usually dictates the editing with the shots being cut to the beat. The main shots used are: Close ups - to display emotion of the character  Long establishing shot - to show the length of the setting in which the chase takes place. Tracking shot - to track the character Slow motion - to create tension and for moments of close call. Horror Chase Scene: Action Chase Scene: Comedic Chase Scene:

Filming for Dialouge - Take 2.2

Image
Photos from the shoot: With the filming of the dialouge sequence the biggest issue we faced was the repositioning of the camera for the reverse shot. This was because of hhow we had to position our 2nd actor on a wheely chair because we did not have acsess to a corner sofa. As well as this the lighting for our second character was too harsh and we wernt able to create the same lighting from the movie. On the plus side I feel like this was a good attempt at recreating the scene as it is always easier to create your own than to copy another persons work, as you have more creative freedom. dont feel at home recreation from Mae Powell on Vimeo .

Movie Review: "O'brother where art thou"

"O'brother, where art thou" is a  film made by the Coen Brothers in 2000. It stars George Clooney, John Turturro and Tim Nelson. The film is has elements of Homers epic "The Odyssey", in the sense of we have the sirens, the link between George Nelson (bank robber) and Hermes the God of Theives and the main characters are both somewhat similar. They both have a roguish trickster quality, and are both plagued by their own vanity. The main character in O Brother is obsessed with his hair, and is always trying to protect it and find his elusive "Dapper Dan" hair product. Odysseus is obsessed with his own reputation. There isnt and strong mirroring between the two stories, it seems more like the Coen brothers wanted to contain nods to the epic poem, rather than replicating it. Also the film is set in 1937, during the great depression, in rural missisipi. The movies title is a reference to 1941's Sullivans Travel, in which the protagonist is a director

Filming for Dialogue - Take 2

After the disatster of Thursdays filmimg we re collected and decided to do a scene from the film "I dont feel at home in this world anymore". We knew that this scene would be more achievable because we had a location to film in and we knew we could light the scene. We started by breaking down the scene into the shots needed and how we would film it. We booked out all the equipment needed for filming on Sunday, on the Friday.  This was: C100 Tripod Super kit lights (300w, 2 650w amd 800w. Including gels) Dimmable 300w Sandbags Kit bag Boompole Filming was started on Sunday at 10am. We set up equipment and set the scene while the talent were reading the script. The llighting was set up as see above, starting with a wide and slowly moved in closer.

Filming Dialogue - Fail

Image
For the origional recreation of a dialolgue scene, we were going to do the interigation scene from "NightCrawler" staring Jake Gyllenhaal as Louis Bloom. Below is the scene. The first issue we encountered was trying to find a room that was good enough to film in. Unfortunatly the shoot studio was booked out and the offices we tried to film in were either in use or un-usable.  Another issue was, when we found a room to film in we had a big issue with lighting it correctly due to the window in the background, and the way the lights are used in the scene. There is clearly a floresant light shinning directly down onto the table.  Photos from the attempted filming: We decided to re-group after the filming and see if there is another scene we could film.
