Lighting a Scene

When it comes to lighting a scene there are 3 types of lights that you need to think about. These are backlight, fill light and key light. When using these 3 at the same time it is refered to as using 3 point lighting.

Another kind on lighting that if often used in movies is practical lighting. For example a lamp in a scene can be used for decoration as well as to help create some backliighting. A good example of this is how Stanley Kubrick uses christmas lights and lamps to light this scene from "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999). He has done fanominal work with "Barry Lyndon" (1975).
